I really don't know how the transom mod increased the speed, because I done so much other stuff at the same time, the new motor was over 400hp,  then a custom prop,  all-in-all the boat picked up 8 or 9 mph, but I can tell you this, the mod to the nose cone made a noticalbe difference in speed and performance, that brought the speed up 3 mph and pulled the motor down 200rpm.  The prop was lab cut and balanced, designed for speed, and in most turns it would pick up air and bring up the rpm, but after I made the nose cone mod, it allowed more water to get to the root of the prop blades and increased the performance and efficiancy of the prop.

Check out this link, and Tommy in Tampa split the hull on his also, the wood in the side of mine was still in good shape though, so I didn't have to contend with that.

hey Ole Red,

Thx for the warm welcome and the kind words on my other projects.

I know about truing the hull, and it's importance on performance. I think I must have gotten it kinda right on the other two: The 16 runs a respectable 50mph on its original Mercruiser 140, The 23  does 59 mph on the stock 350 Magnum (270hp). I haven't checked on the scimi yet, but both the 16 and the 23 have a 'built in' hook at the end of the hull: on the strakes, about the last foot curves down at least 1/2".....Guess it serves to lift the stern out of the water, or to keep 'm safe from flipover.....The 16 likes to ride on the last 2 feet of it's hull at WOT..........hope the Scimi will be as exiting!!!

 

I wonder if anyone has gone this far in the resto of a Scimitar before..............

I'm glad to see that Scimitar going into restoration, and by the way, I viewed the pic's of your other restorations,, You Do Good Work !

One of the first things I learned when I began working on these boats, Galvaston Tx. 1988, a friend of mine called me to come down there and do some work on a couple boats for him, one was a customers 1981 Scimitar, it was setting on a trailer that did not fit the boat, it had a break in the hull on the starboard side inside the chines, the foam logs were soaked, and the floor was wet. After I removed the floor, and the starboard, and a portion of the center stringer, I noticed that the hull had almost conformed it'self to the trailer. When we removed the boat from the trailer to repair the break in the hull, I built a stand framework out of 2 X 6 boards, 10ft long, flat and plum, to set the boat on to replace the stringers and floor.

When I split the hull on my boat, and removed the stringers, I shot a laser beam down the bottom of the hull to find a 3/8 " hook in the port side, the starboard side was pretty close to plum, I built some framework under the hull, made it plum using the laser beam level before I replaced the stringers and floor. These hulls are lite, and have a very shallow "V" thats one of the reasons they are so fast, but when it comes to re-constructing one, you sure better check the bottom, to see thats it's flat before installing the stringers and floor.

New Scimitar project..........


Well, since this seems to be the place to be for specific Scimitar info, here's my 'project'....

It's a 1980 Emerald mist Scimitar, which was handed to me by Auke Touwslager. Bcause of many different reasons, he won't be able to tackle the project, and since I already have two full resto's under the belt (1979 Gold CVX 16 SS and teal 1989 CV 23), the Scimi moved my way..... now, it will need a full resto: the interior is completely shot, as is the floor stringers and transom. It came without engine, transom parts are there, but in a very sorry state: inner plate is corroded to the point it's broken, gimbal ring is seized, and the outdrive is the wrong ratio, and in an unknown state.....

 

 

on the good side, it's complete with new sunroof and side windows.......

 

the work done up to now...... the interior panels are removed as much as possible (inner roof panel is glued). Had to do this because the wood between the inner and outer shell is rotten as well.....I plan to add some stiffness to the side and roof as well...

 

When I figure out how to post pics, i'll add some....
