RE: Buying a Scimitar....

Not yet.  I really want to do a better inspection per the items that olered told me to look for.  I did look at it again.  The paint is pretty dead and he was unable to meet me to take it for a spin.  Maybe look at it this weekend.  He is asking 10k with no trailer...might be a little high.
Please let me know if there is anything else i need to know.  Thanks again

Buying a Scimitar....

Welcome to the site !
You have come to the right place to get the information you are looking for I'm sure.  The Scimitars are a striking boat alright, and they are very desireable, but we have certainly seen in the last two years the price one will bring is un-predictable, for example, three years ago, an emaculate restored 81 model brought $21,900 and was shipped to the UK from the USA, just a month later one brought $20,100 and was shipped over seas.  In my opinion, those two sales brought several other Scimitars out on the market from owners that did not know their value.  Two years ago one in Texas brought $14,?00 and was trailered about 1300 miles to it's new home. I bought mine in Maryland three years ago as a project and I paid $4800 for it, and I stopped keeping track of how much I have spent on it, but I'd guess I have put near 300 hours of labor into it.  One in Arizona brought $4500 as a project and it took about $10,000 to get in on the water. Several months ago, the most beautiful restoration I've ever seen brought $23,000 and was shipped about 1500 miles,  in the last two years there have been several projects sell from $4000 to $6000 and  I know of one that brought $3000 that was a total project,  There was an Emeral Mist 80 model brought $10,000 almost as soon as it hit ebay last year, it all depends on the condition of the boat,  Mostly ... the floor and stringers, as well the transom.  These boats are at the age that we MUST do a good inspection of the transon and the flotation boxes in the bilge,  those boxes are prone to trap water and cause rot,  that is a kind of Tell Tale to the condition of the transom.  There are a bunch of little foam logs all under the floor, and up under the bow that are also prone to absorb water and cause the floor to rot, as well the stringers. You just have to do a Good Inspection to satisfy yourself as to the condition of these boats.

Check out the projects page on the site here and you will see what it takes to complete a project,

there has been a couple sold in the last two years that were represented as Good Condition, but were not, and big bucks were spent to restor them,  so, just be careful with your inspection.  There have been several sold as well that were lake ready, and sold as represented, those boats brought Good Money.  The boat the Rex just sold is a Beauty, and in my opinon was a Great Buy for $16,500 ... I have had two offers on my boat last summer of $15,000 and another just a couple days ago for the same, but I have not made my mind up to sell yet, I have two appointments at glass shops tomorrow morning for their opinion of the windshield, I'm still undecided, but I wouldn't take a nickle less than $16,500 for my boat as it is, but that price may be too much for most because of all the modifications I have made on it, it's not a show boat, but it looks pretty good to most people, and I have gone to some extream with this baby to make it go fast,  it's running in the mid 70's in cold water and a mild chop,  the best recorded speed by the gps is 71.2 mph but it has certainly ran faster than that, and it was timed on a 1000 ft drag course at 62 mph in 13 seconds. check out my You Tude video's from our video page.

There were about 500 of these boats made, acording to Art Carlson, and he told me that about 300 of them were sold to dealers in seven different countries, leaving about 200 of them in the USA, several sold since has been shipped to canada and Austrailia, Sweeden, the UK, and Germany.  Most people associate these boats as being the James Bond boat that was used in the movie Moon Raker,  actually that was a CV23-HT that was made for that movie, just resembles the Scimitar, there were only a Few of the CV23-HT made, but the Scimitar seems to have stolen the glory because of that.

Parts ?   not many,  the tops and winglets, yes.  Most of the hardware, yes.  the windshield trim I believe would be automotive from that era because it is held in place by automotive clips that rusted quick.  The power seat was a pasenger side seat from a 1979 /1982 Cadillac, as was the ash trays, radio and the clock was after market automotive of thee era.  There are some aftermarket lighted swiches that are almost identical as the overhead switches, and there are letters available that are very close to original, but I have not been able to find the identical.

These boats are not very strong or tough, they only weigh in about 2000 pounds lake ready, thats one reason they are fast,  and original boat would run 58 /60 mph when it was brand new, and as far as the ride ... just don't go fast in choppy water and you will love it,  these boats handle like a sports car.

Buying a Scimitar....

I have located a scimitar I am interested in buying. New to this forum and Scimitars too.   I love the style and ride though.  A brief discription,  it is the green mist, original condition to the best of my knowledge. Overall appears to be in good condition considering it is original. It has about 600 hrs. We are going to test drive this weekend.  Owner says it is great shape mechanically (dont they all say that?) I know it is missing one of the small trim pieces on the windshield.
I am wondering what i should look for when buying it?  What are the good and bad points about Scimitars.  What is the price range of an original average to good shape Scimitar.  Anything anyone can help me with would be greatly appreciated.
