Hi Steve, about the windshield .. I am going to pull it out myself, Carefully, I have a plan to get it out with-out taking a risk of breaking it anymore, but I'm going to do that after the Red Wing show, the long cracks are on the inside lamenate, and the resin won't run up-hill so the windshield must be turned up-side down for it to work.

The cam I had in the motor before this one was the GM "Hot Cam" it was a strong cam, it had a pretty smooth idle, the reason I was concidering going back to it was mainly the gas consumption, this cam picked the speed up about 3 mph, but it made a noticeable difference in gas consumption, but I do like the sound of it.   

I have been anxious to take this motor down, see how it's doing inside.  I was pleased to see how clean it was running, there was very little carbon on the pistons, the valves were just a little dark brown, no evidence of a clearance problem, the top rings are worn a little bright, but the others showed hardly any evidence of wear,  the cylinder wall are just perfect.  The main and rod bearings showed a little wear.  The prop I ran this motor with first,  when I took it to Muscatine, the motor was turning 6200 rpm, speed running in the mid 60's, and turns 6200 rpm with the drag prop, so I wasn't surprized to see a litle wear on the bearings.

I took the carborator off this motor to try on Tom's jet boat when were having trouble with his, and it ran that 455 just like it was made for it,  so I decided to just leave it on the 455 and buy a new one for my motor, and run the opional jets.  By changing out the carb, and retarding the timing just a few degree's, I will be able to run the 91 octane gas right out of the pump,  and I can run the 87 octane by using the Lucas brand octane booster.  I spoke with a tech rep at Lucas on the phone about it,  he said their product will boost the 87 octane gas to 91 and thats it,  more is not better.

I don't know if this will slow my boat down much or not, but it sure will save me a lot of trouble and expense mixing the gas to run in the thing, and worrying about the rating of gas at the marina pumps. This motor is running a 10.+ compression ratio, the octane rating and timing advance is critical for it's life, and performance.

good to hear, I thought maybe the windshield was unuseable as it is. and I agree, I wouldn't pull it out if you are trying to fix it, I would be afraid like you that it would be a total loss if it came out. I think I am gonna go acrylic because I don't have much choice. the good thing is that I have this flimsy 1/4" piece in it now for a pattern. I do have a question, I guess the windshield wipers were optional, since mine has none, and no hole or switches for it... do these boats get much water on the windshield under normal conditions? seems like the hull design would not throw much up on it, but you would know better than me!

 you said you were thinking about going back to the old cam profile before you got into the motor... were you worried about clearance? when you said the pistons and valves looked good, I wasn't sure if you were talking about clearance, or about how clean it is running.

Just kidding Steve,  the boat is very usable with the break in the windshield,  I have been looking on the internet at the resin system they use to repair long cracks like this with, ands I think I will try to repair it myself, the glass shop that was going to remove it and see what they could do with it was going to charge me $50 to remove it, but they would not give me a price fore the repair,  they said they didn't know how many hours it would take, so they just give me an estemate between $250 and $350, pluss the removal and instalation,  but what made me change my mind about letting them do it was that he said there was a fair risk of breaking it when they remove it.   I just hate to put the arcrylic in it if I can get this one to look even half way presentable,  I think I can do it myself,  after the Red Wing show though,  there is just not time right now.

I removed the motor yesterday, took it apart and it all looks really good,  I am putting it back together as it is, I thought I'd change the cam back to the one I had beforew, but as good as the pistons and valves look I'm just leaving it alone.  I will probably get it back in the boat Friday.

yes sir, I am a big fan of that CV with the twins... saw a few pics of the engine bay... VERY nicely done show piece there. I spend alotof time on their site. good people, and good conversation. alot like here...  smile

REALLY wishing I was going to that meet. if I had known you were going, I might have made it happen. chance to ride in Red's Gold... it's worth the drive! like I said, good bunch of guys, a few that I have got to know pretty well via Email, that I would like to meet.

hate to bring up a sore subject, but what did you decide to do with the windshield? did you go acrylic, or is it still useable as is?

Hi Steve,  that trip was pretty sudden for us too, and Yes,  seems like a Great bunch up there,  I seen on one of the forums where that Green 80 model is planning on being up there also,  and in the video's there was an 81 model like mine, I'd like to have a picture of three or four of these baby's running side by side.

and Hey ... even if it's not a Scimitar,  ya gotta check out this little CV-16 ... Two V-8's and place diverters .. I'm anxious to see this one up there.  You can see it on the video at 3:28 minutes .. Awsome little boat  http://www.cgoamn.com/index.html

well, I have been watching this trip come together over on CGOAMN, and I gotta tell ya OleRed, if I knew you and the Fox and the Almighty Scimitar were headin up there, I probably would have made it there myself! with the CVZ this time... but if you are going next year, I would love to have the Scimitars there together. they are a great bunch of guys, I think you will have a good time, and I know they are looking forward to seeing Red's Gold. that boat has quite the following... smile
